In walking meditation, we are invited to encounter the gift of our life with every step.
Most of us know what it’s like to kick off our shoes and step onto grass, sand, or soil—how suddenly we feel fully awake to where we are standing. Awareness sharpens. We find ourselves drawn back into the vivid present.
In the book of Exodus, there is a famous moment when Moses stands before the burning bush, aflame but not consumed. God says to him: “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5).
Early Christian teachers understood the sandals to symbolise all that keeps us distracted and distant—our inattentiveness, our absorption elsewhere. “Take off your sandals” is a call to return: to step barefoot, in spirit, into the sacredness of each moment, where the Ground of all being is ever present.
Begin by pausing. Take a few slow, deep breaths. Feel the gentle rise and fall of your body with each inhalation and exhalation, returning your attention to this present moment.
When you are ready, begin to walk slowly and mindfully.
Notice the sensation of your feet touching the ground—the subtle shift of weight, the meeting of skin and earth. In walking meditation, we are not walking to get somewhere; we are simply walking to know that we are walking.
Allow your breathing to find a natural rhythm with your steps.
You might take two or three steps for each in-breath, and two or three steps for each out-breath—whatever pace feels spacious and comfortable.
As you walk, let go of worries about the future, regrets about the past, and concerns about the present. If such thoughts arise, simply notice them without judgment and let them pass by, returning your awareness gently to the breath and the step.
Whether you walk for half an hour or for a few quiet minutes, let your whole awareness embrace the simple miracle of movement, breath, and life.
Notice the vastness of the sky, the strength of a tree, the presence of others near you. Let your senses open wide to the beauty that is always here.
With each step, each breath, savour the gift of being exactly where you are.
“Behold,” says Christ, “I have left an open door before you, which no one can close” (Revelation 3:8).
The door is already open. We have already been given everything we need for the journey.
